Biography

Barbara grew up in the Chicago metropolitan area and pursued a career in special education and social work before following what had been a long-term interest in art. The Boston area was home for 30 years until she moved to Vermont in 2006.

Since the late 1990’s Barbara has devoted herself full-time to the study and creation of art. Her work has been exhibited throughout the country and in Australia and is represented in private and corporate collections in the United States, Europe and Australia. Barbara divides her time between studios in Vermont and Sydney.

Barbara initially studied watercolor and acrylic painting, but soon became drawn to printmaking. The aspects of layering and texturing it offered easily translated into mixed media, which has been the focus of her work for the past several years. While still continuing to create some two-dimensional work, most recently she has become fascinated by the possibilities of working three dimensionally, using re-cycled or re-purposed material as much as possible.

Barbara is represented by the West Branch Gallery in Stowe, VT.

Artist Statement

As an artist, experimentation is central to my working process. I love to find and collect materials from surrounding environments and increasingly I incorporate re-cycled or re-purposed materials into my work. Often the materials at hand become the starting point for a piece that emerges and evolves into a series that expands on the original experiment.

In my tea work series that evolved over several years, I became fascinated by the process of assembly based on a prosaic base element, using hand or machine stitching, gluing, stapling, knotting, binding or beeswax to create two and three dimensional pieces from a variety of different kinds and shapes of tea bags. This love of paper continues, but has taken new and different directions with my use of Chinese joss paper and the construction of artist books.

Increasingly, I am also being drawn toward three dimensional work. I am experimenting by integrating into my work natural materials such as seed pods, fiber based papers, palm fronds and other plant vegetation which offer both fascinating opportunities and interesting challenges in assembly and expression. In making this work, I am discovering that the identification and collection of materials in itself can be part of the enjoyment of the larger creative process.

As this body of work evolves, I find it continually fascinating to be challenged to create interest and beauty out of recycled and common material. Although the process of construction can be repetitious and slow I am surprised by how much that patient process allows for contemplation and resonates with my life at this stage.
